The Leadership of Civilization Building
by Richard Spady and Richard Kirby

Given the collapse of "Christendom" and the "decline of the West" in the 20th century, religion has largely focused on "evangelization" rather than "civilization" as the goal of history or God's kingdom. Nevertheless there is a hunger within every human heart for home, the safe harbor of civilization, a habitation built by Divine-human partnership. Against this backdrop, a world class theologian and social scientist have teamed up to take a fresh look at "civilization theory" as related to the mission of the church and society. Spady and Kirby's theme is that a better civilization is not only desirable, but also attainable. They believe this is not only true spiritually and ethically, but also as a civic, economic, educational and political project. The Leadership of Civilization Building is a virtual manual for social architects and creative civilization builders. It provides leaders with the tools--conceptual and social, to help them "talk" symbolically with their audiences about the improvement of their own congregations, institutions and societies as a whole.
