Houston Conference
by staff writer, Jan 9, 2009

On January 23-25, Presence will be in the greater Houston area to participate in the annual Texas Regional Transmillennial Conference. We will gather with the Sjolander Road Fellowship to explore new ways of understanding Biblical story and living the continually transformative presence of God.

The theme is "What Is Sin Really?"

This conference will focus on the subject of sin. Speakers will explore a deeper understanding of the concept of sin, going beyond the simplistic notion that sin is the breaking of arbitrary rules restricting humanity’s behavior.

Redemption will be re-evaluated, not in terms of Christ being a penal substitute for mankind that somehow satisfies God's sense of justice. Rather we will examine redemption as the ultimate revelation of the Father's Love.

This will allow us to see Christ as announcer of a counterintuitive wisdom which redefines everything including the concept of sin, redemption, and the practice of love.

The sessions include:

  • Tim King speaking about "Sin and Its Story." He'll be reframing the Augustinian story of Creation-Fall-Redemption in three sessions.

  • Willie Cripps is asking, "The Unpardonable Sin? Is blaspheming the Holy Spirit really too big for the blood of Jesus?"

  • In "Swords to Plowshares" Amie May discusses her thoughts and personal experience on being an effective messenger of love.

  • Donna Brown will look at the effects of living with deferred hope in her session "The Price of Lost Hope."

  • Lara Manning will share her compelling life journey in "My Story."

  • Grady Brown will ask, "How and Why Did They Miss It?" The failure to embrace the Parousia and the subsequent de-eschatologizing of Primitive Christianity has given us the "orthodox" doctrine we have today.

  • Kevin Beck's sessions are entitled, "God's Violence, Your Rights, and an Economy of Love." Kevin will be exploring if it is possible to reconcile the Biblical images of God's violence with the truth that God is love. How can you order your life in a world of love while being conscious of the shadow of violence?

Presence has been blessed to partner with this progressive fellowship for many years. They are always pushing the envelope theologically, and this has resulted in a deepening appreciation for the God who is all-in-all. This explains the name of their website, Knowing Today's God.

Registration is free. If you can't attend in person, the conference will be available via webcast. If you want to participate online, click here for your free registration.
